About...

Wimbledon is one of main four tennis Grand Slam tournaments which form the main events of the tennis season. Dating back to 1877, Wimbledon is one of the oldest, and some would say the most prestigious, tournaments and is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass courts.

The tournament takes place from Monday the 30th of June to Sunday the 13th of July.

Anyone for some facts?

  • It's the oldest tennis tournament - first took place on 1877.
  • The winner do not get to keep their trophy.
  • It's the only Grand Slam tournament that takes place on grass.
  • The grass is cut to a height of exactly 8mm for the tournament and is tended to all year round.
  • The dress code is very strict. Players have to play in all white and the umpire can make players change if they don't meet the code. One year Roger Federer had to change his shoes for his match due to their orange soles.
  • During the tournament over 50,000 tennis balls are used.
  • Martina Navratilova holds the record for the ladies' singles with nine victories whilst the men's is shared between William Renshaw, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer with seven victories.
  • The longest match at Wimbledon lasted 11 hours and five minutes. This took place in 2010 between John Isner of the USA and Nicolas Mahut of France.
  • The record for fastest men’s serve is from US player Taylor Dent at 238kph and Venus Williams holds the fastest women’s serve at 205kph.
  • The loudest known grunt belongs to Russia’s Maria Sharapova who, in 2009, racked up a grunt of 105 decibels - this is roughly the same as standing next to an accelerating motorcycle!
