Remembering Op TELIC

15 Years On

On the 19th of March 2003, the United Kingdom launched Operation TELIC - the British military campaign in Iraq. It would become one of the largest deployments of UK forces since the Second World War and a defining moment for a generation of service personnel.

To mark the 15th anniversary since it ended, BFBS spoke to people who served as part of Op TELIC who have shared their stories and experiences with us.

Please note, these contain accounts of war and conflict which some may find distressing. If you, or someone you know, are affected by anything talked about in these interviews then support is available by clicking the button below.

Stories from those who served

What was Op TELIC?

Operation Telic was the United Kingdom’s role in the coalition campaign to overthrow Saddam Hussein’s regime and respond to international concerns surrounding weapons of mass destruction. British troops were mainly stationed in southern Iraq, where the city of Basra became the centre of UK military activity.

At the height of the operation, over 45,000 personnel from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force were deployed in support of the mission.
