Watch TV in your own bedspace on Op Herrick
Order the kit you need from our Technology staff in theatre – online!
If you’ve deployed on Op Herrick without the right kit you need to watch TV, help is now at hand.
Whether you need a ‘Freeview’ box to go with your telly; a DTT dongle so you can watch BFBS TV’s 9 channels on your laptop; or simply a bit of coax or an aerial, we can now supply them in theatre.
You’ll get 9 channels of BFBS TV on Ops in Afghanistan. As well as the best of British TV on BFBS1 and BFBS2, there’s a movie channel, two Sky Sports channels, Sky News, a music channel, and even a channel specially-timed for Afghanistan. For full details, go to www.bfbs.com/tv and look at the Country Guide.
At the main bases in Helmand Province – Kandahar, Lash, Bastion, FOB Price - BFBS broadcasts via DTT, just like Freeview in the UK. So if you have a TV with an integral digital tuner – as all flatscreen TVs on sale in the UK now are – you can watch whatever you want in your own bedspace. As in the UK, though, you’ll need an aerial to get good reception.
If you’ve got an older, non-digital TV, you’ll need a ‘Freeview’ set-top box.
You can also watch on small portable DVB-T viewers and we can even supply digital photo-frames which can receive ‘Freeview’! Again, You’ll need some co-axial cable (with connectors) to connect the aerial. This is the one element most people forget!
You can also, of course, watch BFBS TV on your laptop, with a USB DVB-T stick, such as the Hauppagge WinTV one. BFBS engineers have found these very reliable in theatre. They have the advantage of having a full-size aerial connector, so you can connect to an exterior aerial for the best reception.
For more detailed information of the type of kit you’ll need to take to make the most of BFBS TV in theatre, visit www.bfbs.com/digitaltv where you can now also order kit from the BFBS website and either collect it from the Bastion DTT Office – in Bastion 1 near the paradigm Welfare cabins - or they will do their best to deliver it to you, and help you set it up.
