Welcome to BFBS Cyprus
BFBS Cyprus has its main studios and head office at RAF Akrotiri in the Western Sovereign Base Area. We also have a smaller studio and office based in Dhekelia in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area.
BFBS Cyprus has a long and illustrious history having first started broadcasting from studios near the capital, Nicosia, in 1948. Since then, we’ve moved our studios around as the military footprint on the island has changed. Dhekelia and Episkopi have both been former HQ’s for us.
Our breakfast show is on-air every weekday from 6am with Wez Thompson giving you the big picture of what’s going on both in Cyprus and back home. Our morning show with Chris Pearson is on-air from 9 and includes the ever-popular ‘Classic Year’ feature from 9:30, testing your musical memory. We stay on air between 11am and 1pm with Neil Skinner playing great music and looking at the weirder stories making the news. All of our local shows give you the chance to win some great prizes.
Between 1 and 3pm, we join our colleagues live in Camp Bastion for the ‘Total Ops Connection’ from Afghanistan. As various troops from Cyprus, the UK and elsewhere serve in the ‘stan, we link them up with family, friends and loved ones at home.
We then join BFBS UK for a couple of hours before the Teatime show goes live with Humf from 5. The show gives a wrap-up of all that’s happened in BFC that day and provides a look ahead to what’s on offer island-wide that night and in the days ahead.
Twice each weekday, we also broadcast ‘Cyprus Today’ the total low-down on all that’s happening in news and sport in the BFC and wider community. There’s also a review of what the local press are saying. Do you have a story or sports result? Then let us know by calling mil 8518 or 2527 8518. You can also e-mail Cyprus@bfbs.com
With the Lion newspaper gone, we also broadcast job spots at regular points through the day if you’re on the lookout for a new job or a change of scene.
On a Saturday, the local breakfast show with Steve knight starts at 8am and gives you the full low-down on what’s happening across the whole of Cyprus (and the weather info including, as we do each weekday, the sailing and skiing forecast depending on the time of year).
Sunday brunch with Charlie Fife is on-air locally from 10am and picks up where the Saturday Breakfast show left off; more info on things to see and do, whatever the conditions.
The whole on-air team are always keen to hear your news and gossip (especially the wind-up variety about your colleagues or buddies!), so feel free to get in touch anytime.
Cath Brazier is our TV Reporter and feeds her stories into the nightly forces news programme ‘British Forces News’ on BFBS 1 TV (7:30pm each evening Cyprus time, repeated at 9:10pm each evening on BFBS 2 TV). Got a story for her? E-mail Cyprus@bfbs.com
Behind the scenes is the hardworking team who make it all happen, day-in, day-out. Technology Manager George Matsangos, Daniel James and Andy Nikolau are our ‘teccy’ team who keep all of the radio and TV systems working. With four studios, satellite receivers and uplinks and a series of radio and TV transmitters dotted across the island, it’s a full-time job.
Tess Turner and Carole Cording are our office administrators and keep the info flowing for us all.
We also have a number of freelance radio reporters and volunteer radio presenters, so maybe you fancy having a go too? Full training is given and who knows where it might lead you?
The final parts of our Cyprus jigsaw are Gill Dollin and Donna Campbell who run our Direct To Home (DTH) offices across BFC. When you arrive on island as an entitled person, you’ll need to register with them using your ID card (or proof of entitlement for civvies). Once you’ve done that, you’ll get a viewing card and will be able to watch all nine TV channels BFBS offers (including a kids channel, a movie channel and Sky Sports 1 and 2… all for FREE).
Each year, you will have to renew your entitlement by visiting the DTH office closest to you.
When you leave the island, you HAVE to return the special viewing card to the DTH office or you will be charged for its replacement. If you have any questions, call in and have a chat with Gill or Donna any weekday between 9am and noon.
Equally, if you ever experience radio or TV reception problems, please call our engineers as soon as possible on mil 8518 or 2527 8518
The team are also keen to get out and about as often as possible, so, if you’re staging a fete, charity bash, unit event or whatever, let us know. We can help you promote the event beforehand and maybe join you there to help with the public address or whatever.
Don’t forget, if you get posted back to the UK, you can still enjoy BFBS Radio nationwide on DAB Digital Radio, Sky Guide 0211 or Freesat 786.
Enjoy your tour of Cyprus and we hope you enjoy BFBS TV and Radio. It’s your station… get involved!
BFBS; true local and worldwide forces broadcasting 24 hours a day.
