ITV series to focus on forces wives

The trials and tribulations of military wives are to be the basis for a new ITV series.

Network bosses have commissioned a six-part run of the show which will follow four fictional women as their partners serve overseas.

It comes after Gareth Malone's choir of Military Wives scored a Christmas number one, following a BBC2 series.

The new drama - which has the working title SWAGS (Service Wives and Girlfriends) - will be based at a garrison town, Leysham, while the husbands are serving in Afghanistan.

The series - created by Birds Of A Feather writer Sue Teddern - is said to be "upbeat" in tone.

ITV said: "These women deal with fixing the boiler, filling the fridge and getting the kids off to school at the same time as coping with infidelity, insecurity, bereavement and bureaucracy."

Executive producer Kieran Roberts said: "Seeing how these remarkable women cope with survival, triumph, love and loss will make compelling viewing.

The series is yet to be cast.
