The funeral of a soldier who died after a road accident near his barracks in Midlothian has taken place.

Fusilier Jamie Candlish, who was a passenger in a car, died at the scene. His colleague was seriously injured.

The 20 year old Fusilier, of 2nd Battalion the royal regiment of Scotland was heading for a night out with colleagues on Friday August 19th when the crash happened.

He returned from Afghanistan in April.

Speaking after the crash Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Graham, Commanding Officer of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, paid tribute saying Fusilier Candlish was immense during the tour “Brave as a lion and always ready with a joke”.

The driver of the vehicle, also with 2 Scots, was seriously injured and remains in hospital in intensive care.

The incident happened on the A701 near Gowkley Moss roundabout at about 11.45pm on Friday, and the road was closed for four hours after the collision.

The funeral took place at Hillhouse Parish Church, Hamilton.
