RICHARD'S PROFILE

Richard was Editor of BFBS TV’s flagship news programme ‘BFBS Reports’ for eight years until the advent of ‘British Forces News’ in early 2010.

Now he heads a team of three people responsible for producing the now daily TV News programme, bringing you a much more comprehensive and up to the minute service of Defence and Military news and features.

Richard’s first stint on Forces TV was as a Reporter in Germany, a job which took him to Bosnia, Russia and to Normandy for the 50th Anniversary of D Day. Before this he spent 16 years in Radio.

He trained at the BBC and began working in Local Radio in Newcastle – a time when it was possible for the youngest recruit to try his hand at reading the news, presenting programmes, running the control room for talk shows and keeping the journalists out of the pub!

When BFBS offered Richard a job in Cyprus, it seemed too good to be true, and he's stayed with BFBS ever since, serving in Cyprus, Gibraltar, Cologne, the Falkland Islands (twice), Berlin and Rheindahlen..

Richard Writes:

"The fact that I’ve stayed with BFBS for so long is probably because there’s rarely time to get bored with your work or your location. My job’s taken me all over the world as a Broadcaster and as a Reporter – from the Great Wall of China to Cape Town, South Africa, from the Crimea to the Prairies – all of it following the British Forces at work and at play.

My most memorable moments? I’d probably pick out two – interviewing Tony Blair days before the Iraq War (subsequently ‘Op Telic really saw our TV News service come of age) And New Year’s Eve 1991, which I spent with a party of British Troops on the first ever Western Aid Convoy to Russia. It was the night the Soviet Union was finally broken up – and even in a vodka-induced haze – it felt like a new world order was coming to pass!”
