LAURA'S PROFILE

Laura joined BFBS as the Production Assistant in August 2002, the day after she graduated with a Theatre Studies degree from St Mary’s University in Twickenham. She had already worked at BFBS the two summers before and so didn’t feel like the new girl for very long. At University she took on many different courses, which included directing, writing, genre & gender, horror and Irish literature. Instead of a dissertation, she directed the play Kafka’s Dick by Alan Bennett. This process took over her life for a good 6 months but she enjoyed every minute.

So far, her proudest moment at BFBS was being present when Joanna Lumley announced that the government had made the historic decision to allow Gurkha’s to settle in the UK. Laura suddenly found herself in a sea of cameramen and at one point had a stills camera rested on her head! She also got the pleasure of filming an interview Victoria Smith did with Joanna.

Another memorable moment for Laura was when she interviewed John Barnes at Anfield about getting surplus premiership kits to hand out in Iraq as part of the Welsh Guards Hearts and Minds campaign. This was once again, stretching the role of Production Assistant to its limit, but she took the challenge head on and enjoyed it immensely!

Laura Writes:

"I’m the Production Assistant for British Forces News. My main role is to assist the Director in the gallery while we are on air. I look after the British Forces News Facebook, Twitter & YouTube accounts and also create the maps and some of the graphics for our programme. My role has developed quite significantly since starting here in 2002. I’ve had a lot of training to expand my capabilities and be a more useful member of the news team.

I’m immensely proud to be part of the British Forces News team because I feel as though we are providing a service that cannot be compared to anything else. We serve those who serve. I love my job because it’s extremely varied and colourful. I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people, work on live sports events and broadcast live from Meribel in France.

I'm a 30 year old die hard Janet Jackson fan and Liverpool supporter with an obsession for very high heels!"
