GALIA'S PROFILE

Having decided she wanted to become a cameraman at age 14 because “it looked cool”, Galia went off to university to do something totally different – a BA in Geography. But not before she had spent 2 fantastic weeks, age 16, on work experience at SSVC.

Clearly the lure of TV wasn’t out of her system because she took the job of Technical Operator offered to her by SSVC the day her finals began in 1995.

After a year working 12 hour shifts at un-Godly times, she became as Assistant Editor for the BFBS TV Promotions Department, leaving behind her dreams of operating cameras (they are way to heavy for her anyway!). However, a new lure took over – the lure of travel, and she quit to spend 7 months exploring the Antipodes and USA.

Coming back to the UK, reality (well -lack of money really) hit, and Galia took on freelance work as an editor for BFBS as well as a transmission controller for the Discovery Channel, finally accepting the latter full time for about a year.

But her dream job was just around the corner, and Galia became the news VT Editor for BFBS ‘Scene Here’ in 2000. And that’s where she’s stayed, editing stories and developing the look on BFBS Reports, now British Forces News. Galia has edited the films for the ‘Big Salute’, worked on the ‘Box Office Boys’ and ‘Room 785’, as well as editing and floor managing on outside broadcasts such as the Combined Services Winter Sports and Armed Forces Day.

Galia Writes:

"Not many people are lucky enough to get their dream job in their 20's, but it happened to me and I'm still here 10 years on!

As the Picture Editor for British Forces news, I'm responsible for working with Reporters and Cameramen, editing their stories and footage into the videos you see on the news. It's a half technical, half creative job, and means I have very tight deadlines so being speedy is the key.

My favourite moment was when a technical error meant our server failed and at midday we had no access to our footage. I had to resort to editing 'tape to tape' (the old fashioned way) - lots of pressure and mad fun! And yes - we got on air!!

My one downer is that I work in a dark room with lots of noisy machinery, and in winter I don't get to see much daylight! But I wouldn't change it for the world!"
