CHARLOTTE'S PROFILE

After graduating from Bristol University with a BSc in Biology, Charlotte joined a major scientific publishing company, at the same time studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Science Journalism.

She began her TV career by moving to the BBC’s world famous Natural History Unit, where she worked behind the scenes making wildlife documentaries.

Deciding to retrain as a Broadcast Journalist, Charlotte took a Postgraduate Diploma at Westminster University, winning a prestigious BBC Radio 4 Student Journalist Award for a documentary on animal rights extremists.

She then worked for various local radio stations, before moving on as a Video Journalist, presenter and roving news reporter with the Press Association. Here she covered a wide variety of events, including the 7/7 London bombings. She also spent time on the red carpet interviewing Sienna Miller, Tom Cruise and Pierce Brosnan, as well as a fair amount of time in the mud, covering the Glastonbury Festival twice.

Her spare time is taken up by the TA. She has been a member for more than twelve years, and after commissioning out of Sandhurst, she swapped microphone for SA80 and spent six months on operations in Afghanistan. As a result of her experiences there, she was invited by the Mail on Sunday to write an article detailing the plight of Afghan women in Helmand. She was also a contributor to the book “Spoken From The Front”, a compendium of letters home from Afghanistan, edited by Andy McNab.

Returning from Afghanistan, Charlotte opted to extend her experience by working as a roving reporter on a lively patch in Devon, then did a stint at Sky News before taking up her post with British Forces News in 2008. Since then she’s been on assignment in the Falkland Islands, on exercise with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in the South China Sea and off the coast of North Carolina. She covered the Gurkha’s pre-deployment training in Brunei, trekked in the Nevada mountains with the Royal Marines Reserve, and joined the Army’s Platoon Commander’s Course in the jungles of Belize.

Charlotte has also been back to Afghanistan twice – the second time she was tasked with setting up the British Forces News operation in Camp Bastion. She spent three months reporting on military operations, as well as the ongoing reconstruction and development effort across Helmand. She gained rare access on board the MERT helicopter, which picks up the most serious casualties wherever they fall, and operates on the frontline of medical care.
