A US court could rule later today that previously secret tapes of IRA members talking candidly about the things they did at the height of the troubles can be given to the police in Northern Ireland.

The tapes were part of an oral history project and were made on the understanding the speakers' names would be kept secret.

Former IRA member - Dr Anthony McIntyre - served 18 years for murder. He renounced violence and became the main republican researcher on the project. He fears bloodshed if the tapes are handed over. Loyalist politicians in the province say its the right thing to do.
