Members of the Royal Irish Regiment have joined commemorations to mark the 95th anniversary of the opening of the great allied offensive on the Somme in which the 36th (Ulster) Division distinguished itself.

They have been in France to remember the five and half thousand members of the 36th who were dead, wounded and missing by the end of the first day of the Battle.

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland The Right Honourable Owen Patterson and the First Minister the Right Honourable Peter Robinson were amongst those who laid wreathes at the foot the Ulster tower laid wreaths in tribute.
