President Obama has announced that the last American troops will leave Iraq by the end of December.
About 39,000 US troops remain in Iraq, down from a peak of 165,000 in 2008.
The President said the US and Iraq were in "full agreement" on how to move forward, adding: "The US leaves Iraq with our heads held high."
Figures from the US Department of Defense show 4,408 American lives have been lost in Iraq since March 2003.
Mr Obama has pledged assistance and "a strong and enduring partnership" with the Iraqi government.
