One of the Royal Navy’s smallest overseas units is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary. The Gibraltar Squadron comprises just two fast patrol boats. It was formed in 1985 to protect the seas around the peninsula.
During a formal reception at the British headquarters on the rock the Squadron’s guest of honour and sponsor, Lady Johns cut the cake. That was followed by the order “Up Spirits”, and the traditional downing of a glass of Navy rum.
Despite its small size, the unit says its presence has a significant effect.
