The Ministry of Defence has reported more than 280 computers have been lost or stolen since May last year.

188 laptops, 99 desktop computers, 72 hard drives and 73 USB memory sticks went missing.

The Defence Minister Andrew Robathan is stressing the information on the devices was encrypted or had other security measures in place.

He also revealed 21 of the laptops were stolen during a single incident in Germany.

Staff at the department also lost 18 mobile phones, 10 BlackBerrys and 194 CDs or DVDs

Mr Robathan said the MOD takes any losses like this very seriously and “there are robust procedures in place to mitigate against such occurrences and to manage such losses when they do occur.”
