Volcanic ash from a massive eruption in Chile at the weekend has disrupted the airbridge to and from the Falkland Islands.

The Puyehue volcano erupted in spectacular fashion on Sunday, sending fine ash several miles up into the atmosphere.

Like last year's eruption in Iceland this one is causing major disruption to air traffic because of the dangers of damage to jet engines and control surfaces.

It means flights to and from the Falklands are on hold until weather experts say it is safe to fly.

HQ British Forces South Atlantic Islands insists the ash poses no risk to public health.
