The Prime Minister has said Britain will never surrender the Falkland Islands and their sovereignty is not up for negotiation.
Speaking on Sunday’s The Andrew Marr Show he said he had spent a “serious amount of time” considering the security of the islands as Argentina’s stance remained hostile.
Last month its president called for negotiations over the future of the islands. More recently South American countries have banned ships flying the Falklands flag from using their ports.
David Cameron said: “We must never put them at risk. We must make sure our defences are strong, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. There’s no question of negotiating; there’s no question of the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. We also need to build strong relationships with all countries in South America, and we’re doing that.
“We are permanently vigilant about the protection of the Falkland Islands and their defence, and I’ve spent a serious amount of time making sure that’s the case.”
