Submarine sinking debated at Westminster

24 January 2012 | England UK  British Forces News

The mystery behind the sinking of the HMS Affray is to be debated at Westminster later.

The submarine sank off the coast of Alderney in 1951, with the loss of its entire crew. It had been undertaking a training exercise.

MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron is to ask the Government for a reinvestigation in a Westminster Hall debate.

Widow June Tower, 81, from Natland, who lost her first husband in the tragedy, said that the truth about the sinking of the submarine was never properly explained.

Mrs Tower believes that the disaster was the result of 'an error of judgement' and that the Affray should never have set sail with an inexperienced crew.
