A Government decision on "outsourcing" search and rescue operations is expected to be made this week.

It is thought a French-US consortium is in pole position to take over from the Royal Navy and RAF fleet.

Private company Soteria already runs a part of the UK’s search and rescue services and it’s thought they are the preferred bidder to take over the entire service from 2012.
