Experts have met to discuss security operations for this year's Olympics.

The Games, which London will host in six months time, must remain a sporting event and not a security event, delegates at the RUSI Olympic Security conference concluded.

The Olympics and Paralympics will involve more than 14,000 athletes with 800,000 spectators watching the competition.

Organisers are taking steps to ensure the high profile event is not a target for terrorists.

A total of 13,500 servicemen and women will be part of the security operations.

Seven and a half thousand will conduct patrols and vehicle checks at Olympic venues and specialists, like bomb disposal teams, will be on standby.

At Weymouth, for the sailing events, HMS Bulwark and RFA Mounts Bay will be in the water, while HMS Ocean will be on the Thames at Greenwich as a helicopter platform.
