More than 300 service personnel and sponsors have witnessed the official opening of the 2012 Inter Services Snow Sports Championships at Meribel in the French Alps.
The opening event of this year's championships was certainly a spectacular one with spectators treated to seeing 4 boarders compete side by side along a course full of jumps, twists and turns.
In the men’s competition the Army’s Si Nicholson was keen to retain his title and got off to a confident start competing in the quarters, semi’s and the final alongside his teammate Jim Scott. The men’s final was a particularly exciting one as all 3 services were represented and it was all three services on the podium with Si Nicholson again taking the top prize.
In the women’s title Sarah Marriott swept the board last year taking the overall women’s snowboarding title but she sadly suffered a bad crash in the women’s final and had to be stretchered off the piste.
The Navy females had a disappointing run this year and failed to get through the quarter finals so the women’s final was therefore a close race between the Army’s Vicky Fox and the RAF’s Lindsay Hind, with Lindsay securing the title for the airforce, winning the Border Cross competition for the first time since 2006.
