The first joint service expedition to explore the mainland of the Antarctic Peninsula is more than halfway to the finish.

A joint team of 24 servicemen and women are navigating the frozen terrain in what they are calling the “spirit” of Captain Scot.

Rather than following exactly in his footsteps they are recalling his sense of adventure and devotion to science.

The team has been climbing previously undiscovered peaks, then skiing down to return to base.
