Military defence chiefs are meeting in Brussels.

The two-day conference will examine NATO’s ongoing operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo – and last years campaign over Libya.

It is the first meeting to be chaired by General Knud Bartels - the first Dane to hold this office - and the 166th NATO Chiefs of Defence Meeting.

Much of the discussion will revolve around the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, in an ever-changing global environment.

Last year, in a retirement broadside, former US Defence Secretary Robert Gates slammed NATO members' willingness to take part in operations. He warned that the US, which reportedly pays 75 percent of NATO’s bills, may distance itself from the treaty organisation.
