In a speech to defence think-tank the Royal United Services Institute, NATO’s senior civilian representative in Afghanistan said the insurgency is on the back foot and failing to disrupt the rule of law.

Sir Simon Gass praised the efforts of British troops and their Afghan counterparts in Helmand.

He set out the key challenges facing Afghanistan in the run up to 2015 and transition to Afghan control.

He has spoken to BFBS about the particular difficulties local security forces will face when they take over volatile areas like Musa Qala.
