Eight people have been killed in a US drone strike on the Pakistan border in an area linked to a militant commander behind attacks on foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Pakistani intelligence officlas say a house in Spalga village in the north west tribal region near the Afghan border was hit.

The identities of those killed is not known, but the area is dominated by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a prominent militant commander.

The US does not publicly discuss details of the covert CIA-run drone programme in Pakistan which has caused tensions between the two countries.
